- The programs first met in 1896. The first Irish victory over Purdue came in 1901 at home 12-6.
- The Irish have won the last ten straight games against Purdue.
- The teams play for the Shillelagh Trophy, a tradition which began in 1957. The Irish are 42-19 since the inception of the trophy, including 23-6 at Notre Dame Stadium. Gold footballs decorate the trophy to display who won each game. Notre Dame victories are signified by gold footballs with an ND on them, while Purdue wins are denoted by gold footballs with the letter P.
- Notre Dame and Purdue had played annually for 68 consecutive seasons from 1946 to 2014.
- This is the third straight season where Notre Dame has faced Purdue.
- The last time these in-state rivals met in West Lafayette was in 2024; Notre Dame took home a 66-7 win.
- Coach Freeman was the Linebackers coach from 2013-15 at Purdue. In 2016, he was named Co-Defensive Coordinator for the Boilermakers.
- The Irish are 9-3 against Big Ten opponents under Dick Corbett Head Coach Marcus Freeman. Notre Dame will have started its 2026 campaign by playing the Big Ten Conference members in three of its first four contests.

- The 90th edition of the Shillelagh Trophy on Saturday afternoon will be exclusively streamed on Peacock. This marks the first time Notre Dame will have an away game streamed on Peacock.
