LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team battled to a third place finish at the Windon Memorial at Onwentsia Club hosted by Northwestern. The Irish finished with a score of 1-under over the 54 holes, recording 839 strokes as a team.
Notre Dame was just three shots away from the top of the leaderboard, as Kansas won the event with a score of 4-under. Washington was second with a 3-under and the Irish were the only other team in the 16-team field to finish under par.
The Irish have now finished in the top three in each of their first three tournaments of the season.
Peyton Blackard was the top Notre Dame performer of the tournament, finishing with a 2-under 208 over the three rounds of play. Blackard finished even par or better in each of the three rounds.
Jacob Modleski and Liam Pasternak each shot a 1-over 211, tying for 21st on the individual leaderboard.
ROUND ONE
The Fighting Irish were in sixth place out of the 16 team field following the first 18 holes of play. Notre Dame shot a 2-over 282 in the first session of the day. The Irish were nine shots off the lead heading into the afternoon round.
Liam Pasternak finished under par in his opening round, shooting a 1-under 69 to lead Notre Dame. The sophomore posted four birdies over the 18 holes of play en route to his impressive round.
Peyton Blackard and Jacob Modleski both shot even par 70s to start the Windon Memorial, each recording four birdies in their rounds. Rocco Salvitti and Chase Oberle tied in the first round with 3-over 73s.
ROUND TWO
Notre Dame was one of just three teams to finish in the red in round two of action, posting a 1-under 279 to charge up the leaderboard into a tie for third at 1-over after 36 holes. The Fighting Irish closed the gap to just five strokes of the leader.
Blackard posted the best round of a Fighting Irish golfer on the day with a 2-under 68 in the afternoon session. His round was highlighted by five birdies while recording just two bogeys to position him in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.
Pasternak continued his strong form, recording his second 1-under 69 of the day to move to 2-under overall, tying Blackard in seventh overall. The sophomore couldn’t have asked for a better start to his round, birdieing his opening four holes.
Salvitti shot an even par 70 in round two while Modleski and Oberle each posted 2-over 72s to give the Irish a round of 1-under.
ROUND THREE
The Irish saved their best round for last, firing a 2-under 278 on Tuesday to finish 1-under for the tournament to place third. All four golfers that scored for the Irish in the third round shot even par or better.
Salvitti and Modleski each finished the round with a 1-under 69 to pace the Fighting Irish. Modleski’s round featured four birdies while Salvitti played a very clean round with two birdies and 15 pars to finish in the red.
Blackard and Oberle each shot an even par 70 on Tuesday to help the team post its lowest score of the tournament.
UP NEXT
The Irish return home to host the Fighting Irish Classic at Warren Golf Course. The tournament opens on Sunday, Oct. 3 and ends on Monday, Oct. 4. The tournament will feature 36 holes of play on Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by the final 18 holes on Monday.
