SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0-5) finished with a 2-2 draw against the #4 Michigan State Spartans (4-0-2) at Alumni Stadium on Thursday night.

Freshman Reese Canada recorded her first career goal and senior Charlie Codd scored her first goal of the season in the draw. Junior goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica finished with five saves on the night as she leads the ACC with 4.5 saves per match.

While it was a scoreless first half, the Irish remained aggressive for opportunities in the first 45 minutes of play.

One of the best looks came from Bristol Kersh in the 23rd minute as the freshman drove into the box from the left flank. She looked to find Ellie Hodsden at the top of the six-yard box, but the pass was broken up by the Spartan defense.

In the first half, the Spartans outshot the Irish 6-5 with three of their shots on goal, but the Irish battled for a 4-1 edge on corner kicks. Kasica finished the half with three saves for the Irish.

Shortly into the second half in the 57th minute, the Spartans found the back of the net, but the goal was called back for offsides. Just two minutes later, the Spartans would find the back of the net again as they claimed a 1-0 lead.

Reese Canada answered the call for the Irish as she brought the crowd to their feet. In the 62nd minute, the freshman launched a free kick from in front of the Irish bench all the way to the bottom corner of the back post for her first career goal. The equalizer made it 1-all.

 

The Irish retained possession and eventually, their persistent efforts paid off. Codd was able to work around two defenders to get into the box and with a right-footed strike, she sent it into the top right corner. The goal in the 84th minute would give the Irish a 2-1 advantage.

Looking to extend their lead, the Irish had an opportunity on a penalty kick in the 89th minute, but missed left of the goal.

Still on the hunt for an equalizer of their own in the final minute, the Spartans were able to find the back of the net on a header with three seconds remaining in the match.

The Irish will host IU Indy on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 PM at Alumni Stadium for Senior Day.
