SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior quarterback CJ Carr has been selected to the Week 5 Davey O’Brien Great 8 following a career performance at North Carolina. As part of his selection, he is now a member of the award’s Midseason Watch List. The Davey O’Brien Award honors the nation’s top college quarterback.
Carr delivered one of the most prolific performances of his career against the Tar Heels, completing 21 of 29 passes (72.4%) for 234 yards and four touchdown passes while adding a rushing score and 15 yards on the ground. The five total touchdowns marked the first five-touchdown game of his career and tied for the second-most by a Power Four quarterback this past week.
Carr wasted little time making his mark Saturday in Chapel Hill, connecting with Jordan Faison on a 28-yard touchdown before finding Jaden Greathouse for a 12-yard score just 15 seconds later. The back-to-back touchdown passes marked the fifth-fastest pair of touchdowns in Notre Dame history since 1960 and the second-fastest back-to-back passing touchdowns in that span. Only one pair of Irish touchdowns has come in quicker succession through the air: in 2018, Ian Book connected with Miles Boykin for an eight-yard touchdown and Alizé Mack for a 35-yard score just 14 seconds apart against Stanford.
With four touchdown passes against North Carolina, Carr moved his career total to 37, putting him within three of Rick Mirer (40, 1989-92) for ninth place on Notre Dame's career passing touchdown list.
Through five games this season, Carr has completed 71 percent of his passes for 1,197 yards and 16 total touchdowns, 13 through the air and three on the ground.
Notre Dame has won 15 consecutive games by double digits, dating back to Sept. 20, 2025, all with Carr as the starter. The 15-game streak is the longest active double-digit win streak in the FBS and the longest in program history. The streak is now tied for the seventh longest all-time in college football history.
