Washington, D.C. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team, behind three goals from Shaylyn Blaney and a career-high 15 saves by goalie Erin Goodman, registered on of its biggest BIG EAST regular-season victories ever as the No. 10/8 Irish defeated No. 7/8 Georgetown 10-8, holding off the Hoyas’ second-half rally. It was the second win for Notre Dame this season over a ranked opponent and marked the first win ever for the Irish at Georgetown.
Jane Stoeckert and Heather Ferguson each added two goals in the win for the Irish, while Gina Scioscia finished with a goal and two assists.
Notre Dame beat Georgetown for the third time in four meetings, although the Hoyas still lead the overall series 8-3. Heading into the contest, Notre Dame was 0-4 all-time at Multi-Sport Field.
With the victory, Notre Dame won its third straight BIG EAST game and improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Georgetown falls to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST play.
The Irish coming off a 16-2 loss on Wednesday at top-ranked Northwestern, put together and impressive offensive and defensive performance in the first 30 minutes as Notre Dame held a 5-1 advantage at the break. Freshman Blaney got the Notre Dame on the scoredboard first with an unassisted goal at 26:03. Scioscia off an assist from Caitlin McKinney gave the Irish a 2-0 advantage at 24:06
The Hoyas netted their lone goal of the first half on an unassisted goal by Molly Ford.
Back-to-back goals by Jane Stoeckert at the 19:25 and 16:50 marks put the Irish up 4-1, while Blaney capped off the first-half scoring for both teams with an unassisted goal at 7:36. Stoeckert’s first goal of the game came off an assist from Alicia Billings.
The one goal in the first half scored by the Hoyas matched the fewest given up by the Irish in the first 30-minute stanza. Notre Dame held Duquesne to just one first-half goal on February 17 in the second game of the season as the Irish went on to an eventual 16-4 victory.
Notre Dame built a 7-1 advantage in the half on goals by Jillian Byers and McKinney at the 24:25 and 23:18 marks, respectively, in the contest. Scioscia assisted on both of the goals.
After the five unanswered goals, Georgetown finally got back on the scoreboard when Mary Beth Mooney produced an unassisted tally with 19:37 to play. The Hoyas then countered with another goal just under three minutes later when Megan Bloomer netted Georgetown’s third goal of the game off an assist from Ashby Kaestner.
Notre Dame then came back with two goals of its own on back-to-back unassisted scores by Ferguson and Blaney at 15:25 and 12:29, respectively, as the Irish took a 9-3 lead.
Georgetown closed the gap to 9-6 with 8:11 to play on three unanswered goals, two by Allie Hubschman and another by Bloomer. The next six-plus minutes produced a defensive battle for both teams. Ferguson’s unassisted goal with 1:49 remaining ended Notre Dame’s scoring draught with the Irish’s final score of the game.
Molly Ford capped off the scoring in the game with two goals at 1:11 and 1:02. She also finished with an assist.
The Irish return to action Wed., April 16 when they play host to Vanderbilt at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
