CINCINNATI, Ohio – The No. 11 Notre Dame men’s soccer team tied Xavier 1-1 in exhibition play on Tuesday evening at the Xavier University Sports Complex. Senior defender Aaron Maund (Dorchester, Mass./The Roxbury Latin School) tallied the equalizer for the Irish in the final two minutes of the 90-minute contest.
Xavier grabbed a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the match.
“It was a game of two halves,” stated Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark. “We didn’t play that well in the first half, but we played very, very well in the second half. Even though we played well in the second half, we gave up a goal with about 10 minutes to play, but we came back with the equalizer from Aaron Maund with about 90 seconds left to play.”
The Irish goal sequence began with a free kick by junior midfielder Dillon Powers (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) from 40 yards out and Maund redirected the ball into the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Wall (Sugarland, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) played the entire match for the Fighting Irish.
Earlier in the evening, Notre Dame topped Xavier 1-0 in a game that featured some of the younger Irish players. The contest featured two 25-minute halves. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Craft (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelly) scored the game winner for the Fighting Irish. Fellow sophomore Adam LaPlaca (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) played all 50 minutes in goal for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame will face No. 21 Butler on Thursday in exhibition play. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. (ET) in Indianapolis, Ind. The Irish will wrap up their exhibition slate on Monday with a home tilt against No. 6 Creighton. That match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Alumni Stadium.
