NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A late first-half goal combined with a staunch defense was all No. 3/3 Florida State needed Sunday to defeat the No. 16/6 University of Notre Dame women’s soccer team 1-0 at Alumni Stadium.
The Irish offense was unable to find the same kind of rhythm that helped propel it over No. 1 Virginia on Thursday evening, as the Seminoles owned an 11-7 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. Notre Dame carried a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior forward Anna Maria Gilbertson led the team with a pair of shots, while sophomore midfielder Taylor Klawunder recorded the squad’s only shot on goal.
Notre Dame had a smattering of early opportunities to start the game and outshot Florida State 3-1 to start the game. The Irish were able to push into the Seminole zone, but found their efforts thwarted by a solid Florida State back line, which managed to get out of the first half without allowing an Irish shot on net.
Florida State got the game’s only goal at the 35-minute mark as midfielder Megan Connolly drove the ball into the box up the left side and dumped it off to forward Berglind Thorvaldsdottir, who got a foot on the ball before it found Elin Jensen on the right side of the goal box. Jensen had just to poke the ball in from three yards out as Irish goalkeeper Kaela Little couldn’t shift over in time.
The only Irish scoring opportunity came in the 62nd minute off a set piece following a Florida State foul. Senior defender Brittany Von Rueden sent a shot into the box from near the right corner and Klawunder connected with it on the header, but Seminole goalkeeper Cassie Miller grabbed the save.
As the game wore on the game’s physicality intensified, and the Irish were issued two yellow cards late in the second half. The first of the game went to freshman forward Natalie Jacobs, who collided with Miller near the top of the box in the 73rd minute, while Von Rueden picked up a card in the 86th minute after disagreeing with a foul call.
The Irish will return to action against Miami (FL) at 8 p.m. ET Friday when they travel to Coral Gables, Florida, for a contest at Cobb Stadium. The Hurricanes fell to No. 7 Clemson 2-1 Sunday in double overtime.
