No. 2 Irish Fall To No. 15 Ohio State In Heartbreaker, 10-9

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 2 Fighting Irish gave up a goal in the final seconds of regulation against No. 15 Ohio State to suffer a 10-9 defeat at Arlotta Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas Ricciardelli made a career-high 20 saves on the afternoon, allowing 10 goals for a save percentage of .667. The goalie also added four ground balls and a turnover.

On the offensive end Chris Kavanagh and Will Angrick each scored twice to pace the Irish attack.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The visitors scored the opening goal three minutes into play before the Irish responded with three straight thanks to goals from Will Maheras, Jordan Faison and Devon McLane to take a 3-1 lead with four minutes left in the first frame. 

The Buckeyes held the Irish scoreless over the next 15 minutes of game play, scoring three unanswered to retake the lead at 4-3. 

Notre Dame managed to go back in front on the scoreboard by the halftime break, as Kavanagh and Jalen Seymour fired in shots to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Irish after the opening 30 minutes of action.

Ohio State came out firing in the third, scoring the first three goals of the half to take a two-goal advantage at 7-5 with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter. The two sides each scored once more in the frame to make it an 8-6 game heading into the fourth frame.

The Irish once again mounted a comeback, scoring three straight to start the period, courtesy of a goal from Kavanagh and two from Angrick to put Notre Dame back in front at 9-8 with eight minutes left in regulation.

However, the visitors finished the game strong, tying the game at 9-9 with 4:31 remaining on the clock before scoring the winner with seven seconds left in the game to escape with the victory.

Notre Dame plays its third straight game against a Big Ten opponent, as the Irish travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 15. The game will be televised on BTN.
