LOUISVILLE — The No. 2 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team suffered just its third Atlantic Coast Conference loss since joining the league in 2013, falling 100-67 to No. 3 Louisville on Thursday night inside the KFC Yum! Center.
The Irish (15-2, 4-1) jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage in the opening minutes and started 4-for-4 from the field, but were ultimately stymied by a Cardinals squad (19-0, 5-0) who went on to shoot 72.0 percent in the first half.
“I thought Louisville looked like the best team in the country tonight,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Women’s Basketball Coach Muffet McGraw said. “They came out ready.
“I was really pleased with Jackie’s effort. I thought she tried to do what she could do, but it was just not enough. They were too much for us to handle tonight.”
Notre Dame opened the second half on a 7-2 run to shorten the deficit to 58-35, but couldn’t sustain the momentum as Louisville’s hot shooting resulted in the Cardinals finishing 65.0 percent from the field for the game.
Jackie Young led three Irish players in double-figures with a career-high-tying 23 points, marking her fifth game of the season and sixth of her career with 20-plus points. Young shot 10-for-21 from the floor and collected a team high seven rebounds.
Mabrey followed right behind with her 12th game in double figures, recording 14 points tonight behind a career-high-tying four made three-pointers. Meanwhile, Shepard rounded out the trio with 12 points and a career high tying six assists.
