COLUMBUS – The No. 2 Notre Dame women’s tennis team cruised past No. 48 Ohio State, 7-0, on Monday afternoon inside the Jesse Owens West Tennis Center for its 16th consecutive victory. The Irish improve to 21-1 on the season, while the Buckeyes drop to 14-7.
The Irish swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The senior All-American tandem of Catrina Thompson (Las Vegas, NV) and Christian Thompson (Las Vegas, NV) breezed past Julie Blackmore and Angela DiPastina, 8-2, at the No. 1 position. The Thompsons, ranked eighth in the most recent ITA poll, improve to 24-7 overall and 16-4 in dual matches.
At No. 2, sophomore Kelcy Tefft (Enid, OK) and freshman Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, KS) knocked off Sonia Ruzimovsky and Caitlin O’Keefe by an identical 8-2 score. Tefft and Krisik now stand 5-0 on the season and 5-0 in dual action. The freshman duo of Cosmina Ciobanu (Brea, CA) and Colleen Rielley (Overland Park, KS) had no trouble at No. 3 doubles, cruising past Ally Mueller and Christina Keesey, 8-1. Ciobanu and Rielley improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in dual matches.
Notre Dame captured all six singles matches, including five in straight sets. Rielley went to a match tiebreaker against Keesey at the No. 3 position before winning, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9). At the No. 1 position, #26 Catrina Thompson upended Blackmore, 7-5, 6-1. At No. 2, Christian Thompson overpowered Mueller, 6-2, 6-1. Tefft blanked Ruzimovsky at the fourth spot, 6-0, 6-0, and #48 Ciobanu blew past O’Keefe, 6-1, 6-3, at the fifth position. At No. 6, Krisik defeated Julie Voss, 6-3, 6-0.
The Irish return to action on Friday, April 13 against No. 8 Northwestern. First-serve in Evansville with the Wildcats is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
