EVANSTON, Ill. — Finishing up the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team defeated No. 29 Oklahoma State today, 4-3.
The Irish fought back from a tough loss to Arizona State yesterday in the first round of the tournament.
“We did a really good job of bouncing back after playing the late match on Saturday,” says head coach Jay Louderback. “We finished sets much better today against an athletic Oklahoma State team.”
Although the Irish were initially down as Viktoriya Lushkova and Katarina Adamovic beat freshman Mary Closs and senior Julie Sabacinski at No. 2 doubles, Notre Dame battled back to win the doubles point. Senior Jennifer Kellner and freshman Jane Fennelly then took down Karyn Guttormsen and Maria Alvarez at No. 3, 7-5. Senior Britney Sanders and sophomore Quinn Gleason clinched the point at No. 1, beating Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari, 7-6 (3).
Sophomore Julie Vrabel was the first singles match off the court at No. 5, defeating Tur Mari, 6-3, 6-2. Closs then beat Adamovic, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4, and Sanders claimed the victory for the Irish at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Narattana.
Notre Dame continues its season this Friday against Illinois at 3:30 p.m. at Eck Tennis Pavilion.
