Greenville, S.C. – The 21st-ranked Notre Dame men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season as the Irish (1-1) dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to #5 Furman in the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational. John Barry Nusum scored two goals for the Paladins (2-0), including the game winner 3:59 into the second overtime session.
With the match tied at 2-2 , Furman’s Sergei Raad beat his defender down the right side of the field and crossed the ball to Nusum, who knocked in the winning score at the 108:59 mark.
Notre Dame got on the board first when Erich Braun (Gerlinden, Germany) knocked in a loose ball in the box at the 13:42 mark with the assist credited on the goal to Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.). Furman scored the equalizer as Nusum found the back of the net at the 19:33 mark on assists from Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark.
The match remained tied at 1-1 until the Irish took the lead at the 70:57 mark as Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) scored on a rebound off of Braun’s shot.
The Paladins tied the game when Sergei Raad ripped a shot from 20 yards out at the 81:11 mark off an indirect kick after receiving passes from Matt Goldsmith and McNeil Cronin.
The match proceeded to overtime where Furman goalkeeper Scott Blount saved the match for the Paladins at the 97:59 mark as he made a diving punch save at a shot from Filippo Chillemi (Roswell, Ga.) to the set the stage for Nusum’s game winner 10 minutes later.
Notre Dame continues play at the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational it faces Clemson at noon on Sun., Sept. 7 in a first-ever meeting between the two schools.
