GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 21st-ranked Notre Dame men’s soccer team dropped to 1-2 on the season after suffering a 4-0 setback to #16 Clemson at the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational. Dimelon Westfield scored two goals and Steven Rhyne added a goal and two assists in the win for the Tigers.
Clemson jumped out to quick 2-0 lead in the first half off of goals from Rhyne and Westfield. Rhyne’s goal came at the 12:49 mark off an assist from Oskar Bringsved. Westfield gave Clemson a 2-0 advantage just three minutes later off assists from Rhyne and Oskar Bringsved.
The Tigers scored two goals in the second half as Westfield knocked in his second goal of the day and Ross Goodacre scored on an indirect kick.
Notre Dame was outshot 22-3 in the game did not attempt a shot in the first half.
With the loss the Irish fall to 1-2 on the season, while Clemson improves to 3-2.
Senior defender Griffin Howard (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Devon Presod (Marietta, Ga.) were selected to the all-tournament team.
Notre Dame returns to action at home at Alumni Field for the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament Sept. 14 and 16. St. Mary’s (Calif.) plays Akron at 5:00 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 14 with the Irish taking on Rhode Island in the second game. On Sun., Sept. 16, Rhode Island faces St. Mary’s at 12:00 p.m., followed by the Irish meeting Akron in the second game.
