CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team lost to Virginia today, 6-1. The Irish are now 8-7 on the season.
“We have to make fewer errors,” explained head coach Jay Louderback. “We give away too many free points. Our doubles are continuing to improve which will be a key factor in the post-season.”
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Britney Sanders and sophomore Quinn Gleason continued their streak of strong play with a win over 19th-ranked Julia Elbaba and Rachel Pierson, 8-1. However, Notre Dame’s other two teams fell to their Cavalier opponents, and the Irish lost out on the doubles point to begin the match.
Virginia nearly made a sweep of the Irish in singles matches, with only sophomore Julie Vrabel claiming a victory. She beat Li Xi in a tiebreaker after splitting sets, 6-3, 3-6, (11-9). Both Sanders and freshman Monica Robinson also took their matches to third-set tiebreakers but were not able to pull them out.
Notre Dame will have to rebound quickly, as they travel to play North Carolina on Sunday at 12 p.m.
