TULSA, Okla. – No. 29 Tulsa overcame a 1-0 doubles deficit to outlast No. 16 Notre Dame, 4-3, in a match that last four-plus hours at the Michael D. Case Center in Tulsa, Okla., Saturday afternoon.
Notre Dame won the doubles point over the Golden Hurricane by winning at two and three. After No. 19 Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique breezed past No. 76 Chrissie McGaffigan and Jennifer Kellner, 8-1, the Irish tied up the doubles contest with a win at three. Julie Vrabel and Quinn Gleason defeated Renata Kuricova and Maria Sant’Anna, 8-6, before No. 52 Britney Sanders and Julie Sabacinski topped Michelle Farley and Saan Saarteinen at two by the same score of 8-6 to give Notre Dame the early 1-0 lead.
The Golden Hurricane made their comeback in singles, winning at one, two, five and six to claim the close win.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 as Gleason won over Farley at three, 6-2, 7-6.
Tulsa trimmed the lead to 2-1 after No. 22 Vickers took down No. 49 Sanders at one in a close two-set affair, 7-6, 7-5.
The Irish were on the verge of victory as they won in two sets at four as McGaffigan defeated Saarteinen, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).
However, Tulsa wouldn’t go away, trimming the lead to 3-2 after Kuricova bested Sabacinski in three sets at six, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
The Golden Hurricane knotted the score at three as Sant’Anna defeated O’Koniewski at five in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
With the match on the line, Enrique topped Kellner, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, at two to give Tulsa the thrilling win.
Notre Dame (11-7) continues its road swing at 3 p.m. (ET) Tuesday as the Irish travel to Marquette.
