BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The third-ranked Irish women’s tennis team improved to 17-2 with a 7-0 sweep of Indiana Thursday afternoon.
Notre Dame took an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Third-ranked Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling defeated Katya Zapadalova and Maria Guerreiro, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles, before Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik downed Sigrid Fischer and Charlotte Martin, 8-1, at second doubles to clinch the point for the Irish. Colleen Rielley and Shannon Mathews knocked of Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey, 8-6, at No. 3 to complete the sweep.
No. 49 Frilling moved the Irish ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Martin at second singles. Ciobanu defeated Alba Berdala, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to give Notre Dame its third point of the match, while Mathews downed Fischer, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles to clinch the win for the Irish.
Kristen Rafael claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Stuckey at No. 5 singles, while No. 33 Tefft defeated Zapadalova, 6-2, 6-1, at first singles. Krisik outlasted Sopel, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) at sixth singles to complete the sweep for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame returns to the Eck Tennis Pavilion Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Baylor.
