NOTRE DAME, Ind. –The third-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team cruised to its school-record 12th victory of the 2001 campaign as the Irish defeated Harvard 16-4 to conclude its regular season. The win was the seventh straight for head coach Kevin Corrigan’s squad who improved to 12-1 on the season, its best won-loss record in the program’s 21-year history.
Seniors Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) and Chris Young (Manlius, N.Y.) were instrumental in the Irish victory as they combined for seven goals and eight assists as Notre Dame recorded its largest margin of victory in a game this season. Glatzel tallied five goals (tying his career high) and dished off three assists, while Young netted two goals and had a career-high five assists. The tandem combined for six goals in the contests with Glatzel being the goal scorer on four of those occasions.
Another senior, Todd Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) made his last game at Moose Krause Stadium a memborable one as he tallied three goals on the day. Another multiple goal-scorer on the afternoon was senior Jon Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) who finished with two goals on the afternoon.
The Irish also got goals from Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.), Devin Ryan (Kensington, Md.), freshman Dan Berger (Phoenix, Md.) and senior Kevin Dugan (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J.).
Senior David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.), the school’s all-time career assist leader, added to his school-record total as he finished with one assist on the afternoon for a career total of 108.
With the win Notre Dame also concludes the season with a 6-0 home record, its fourth undefeated home campaign in the program’s history. The Irish also have posted undefeated seasons at home in 1994 (5-0), 1995 (5-0) and 1997 (6-0). Corrigan’s squad also held an opponent to five goals and under for the seventh time this season.
The Crimson, who fell to 6-7 on the season, scored just two goals in each half as Notre Dame shut out Harvard in both the second and fourth quarters.
Notre Dame trailed 2-1 after the first quarter. Todd Ulrich got the Irish at the scoreboard at the 11:08 mark of the contest, but Harvard tallied the next two goals on scores by Jay Wich and Jeff Gottschall.
The Irish then ran off six unanswered goals as the Irish held the Crimson scoreless for nearly 30 minutes. Ryan had the goal which knotted the game at 2-2 1:20 into the second quarter before Todd Ulrich’s score at the 11:15 mark gave the Irish the lead for good. In the six-goal burst, Glatzel tallied twice and Notre Dame grabbed a 7-2 lead with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter.
Alex Vap ended the scoring drought for the Crimson with 7:01 left to play in the third quarter off Matt Primm’s third assist of the afternoon, but Harvey answered for Notre Dame tallying his second score of the game. Harvard closed to within four goals (8-4) at the 5:25 mark when Dana Sprong netted the final goal of the game for the Crimson off an assist from Roger Buttles.
Goalie Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.) played all but the final 10 minutes of the contest and made 13 saves.
Glatzel scored three straight goals for the Irish as Notre Dame tallied the game’s final eight goals. Todd Ulrich, Young and Bishko contributed as did Berger, who scored his first collegiate goal, and Dugan.
Notre Dame, which clinched its third consecutive Great Western Lacrosses League crown last weekend against Fairfield, will be idle in the final week of the regular season. Bids for the NCAA tournament will be announced on Sun., May 8 at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
