NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team kicked off the 2013 spring season in fine fashion with a pair of 7-0 sweeps over BIG EAST foe Marquette and Western Illinois Saturday at Eck Tennis Pavilion.
The No. 30 Irish played 14 student-athletes between the two matches. No. 80 Greg Andrews and freshman Quentin Monaghan each picked up a pair of singles victories, while the Irish doubles teams looked strong in locking up the doubles point in about 45 minutes in both matches.
“I was really pleased with how our guys came out and fought in both matches,” said head coach Bobby Bayliss. “We always expect a battle from Marquette and our team came out and performed well.
“It was great to see Western Illinois head coach Chris Kane back at Notre Dame. He was a captain as a senior in 1975 and it’s always good to have alums of our programs back in town.”
Notre Dame continues its three-match home stand Tuesday when the No. 41 Northwestern Wildcats come to Eck for a 6 p.m. match.

Notre Dame got the day started on the right foot with a quick doubles victory over the Golden Eagles. The No. 3 doubles duo of Ryan Bandy and Matt Dooley claimed an 8-2 win over James Stark and David Packowitz. No. 51 Greg Andrews and Spencer Talmadge gave the Irish the early 1-0 lead by knocking off Dan Mamalat and Vukasin Teofanovic, 8-2, at one.
For the first month of the season doubles will be played like the NCAA Tournament with the final contest abandoned as soon as the doubles point has been decided. At two doubles Alex Lawson and Billy Pecor were leading Logon Collins and Cameron Tehrani, 5-4, when the match was abandoned due to the Irish locking up the point.
In singles the Irish won five of the six matches in straight sets. No. 110 Blas Moros stepped off the court first with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Teofanovic at No. 2 singles. No. 80 Greg Andrews gave Notre Dame with a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mamalat at one. Freshman Quentin Monaghan closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Collins at No. 3 singles.
Bandy won 6-4, 6-2 over Packowitz at six singles and No. 88 Pecor defeated Gleb Sklyr, 7-6 (0), 6-1, to close out the straight set matches. No. 120 Wyatt McCoy ended the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (4) victory over Tehrani at No. 4 singles.
Notre Dame improved to 48-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles, including 8-0 under head coach Bobby Bayliss.

The Irish roared out to a 1-0 lead after doubles play as they picked up wins at one and three. Talmadge and Dougie Barnard breezed past Patrick Hammers and Ben Yue, 8-1, at one, while Kenneth Sabacinski and Nicolas Montoya knocked off Mitch Granger and Brandon Meeker, 8-4, at three. Lawson and McCoy’s match at two was abandoned after Notre Dame clinched the doubles point with the duo up 7-4 over Christoph Haertel and Bradley Holt.
Notre Dame clinched the match in singles as all six Irish student-athletes won in straight sets. Monaghan gave his squad a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hammers at two. Sophomore Michael Fredericka blanked Max Cederkall, 6-0, 6-0, at six to extend the lead to 3-0. Lawson clinched the match for Notre Dame with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
Dooley pulled out the closest match of the night with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Granger at five singles. Andrews improved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Haertel at one and Michael Moore took down Holt at three, 6-2, 6-3, to close out the day for the Irish.
The match was the first between the two schools.
