CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 41 University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team kicked off its Atlantic Coast Conference slate with a win Thursday, sweeping Boston College 7-0 at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Irish rested most of their regular starters against the Eagles and won handily at nearly every position. Notre Dame snared the doubles point with junior Eddy Covalschi and sophomore Brendon Kempin defeating Kyle Childree and Hank Workman 7-5 at No. 1, while junior Josh Hagar and senior Nicolas Montoya defeated Kent Mukai and Jeffrey Melvin 6-2 at No. 2.
In singles, Covalschi assumed the No. 1 spot in the lineup, defeating Workman 6-0, 6-4. Hagar upended Aidan McNulty 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 slot, while freshman Grayson Broadus beat Melvin at No. 3, 5-7, 6-2, 11-9. At No. 4, freshman Daniel Rayl bested Mukai 6-2, 6-4.
Notre Dame (7-6, 1-0 ACC) and Boston College (3-5, 0-1 ACC) played one eight-game pro-set each on Courts 5 and 6, with the Irish emerging victorious in each match. Senior Kenneth Sabacinski defeated Alexandre Thirouin 8-5, while Montoya downed Childree 8-2.
The Irish will return home this weekend, continuing ACC play against Louisville at noon ET Sunday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
