PROVO, Utah – The fifth-ranked Irish women’s tennis teams topped No. 39 BYU, 6-1, Saturday in Provo, Utah.
The Irish got on the board first with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point.
Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley defeated Elle Carney and Chie Hayasaka, 8-3, before No. 2 Kali Krisik and Kelcy Tefft downed McCall Jones and Megan Price, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point. Cosmina Ciobanu and Kristy Frilling dropped their match to Kristina Doerr and Romina Nedakovic, 8-7.
Frilling put the Irish ahead 2-0 after defeating Doerr, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Kristen Rafael earned Notre Dame’s third point with a 7-5, 6-4 No. 3 singles victory over Nedakovic. Jones gave the Cougars their first point, as she knocked off Tefft, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Krisik clinched the match for the Irish with her 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory over Hayasaka at No.4.
Ciobanu defeated Price, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5 singles and Mathews downed Carney, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6.
The Irish improve to 8-1 on the season, while BYU falls to 3-4.
Notre Dame will take on Utah Sunday at 11 a.m. (MT) in Salt Lake City.
