BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The sixth-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team broke a 1-1 tie with three goals in 3:06 to beat Indiana 4-1 on Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. After a 1-1 tie at halftime, senior All-American Jenny Streiffer finished a counterattack in the 81st minute for the game-winning goal. Senior All-American Jen Grubb and senior Jenny Heft then scored a pair of goals in the 83rd and 84th minutes for the Irish, who improve to 15-3-0 with their 39th consecutive win against a Big 10 team.
Indiana ends its season with a 5-8-6 record. Notre Dame returns to action as the four-time defending BIG EAST champions play host to Miami at 7:30 p.m., at Alumni Field on Tues., Nov. 2, in a BIG EAST championship quarterfinal game.
Senior defender Kara Brown began sequence of the gamewinner when she cleared the ball out of the Irish box and directed the ball to the right sideline near midfield. Heft dribbled down the sideline and found a sprinting Streiffer with a pass through the Hoosier backline. Streiffer ran with the ball inside the box and scored in the lower right corner past Indiana goalkeeper Ashley Davis, who came off her line but could make the save at 80:01.
Grubb then scored her ninth goal of the season at 82:19 when her corner kick curved over Davis’ head and into the net. Heft then gave the Irish a 4-1 lead when she Streiffer found Heft on the left wing with a through ball just passed midfield. Heft dribbled into the box and scored from the left side from 12 yards into the right corner at 83:07 for her Notre Dame record 76th career goal.
The Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead 1:28 into the game when Kristen Sprunger booted in a failed clear from a corner kick from eights yards in the middle of the box. Indiana held the lead for 32:47 until junior Meotis Erikson tapped in a free kick at 34:25. Brown served a free kick two yards from the corner to the far post where Erikson tapped in the tying goal from two yards.
Notre Dame finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks. Indiana committed 14 fouls to 10 for the Irish. Davis stopped seven Notre Dame shots, while senior All-American LaKeysia Beene made two saves for the Irish.
Grubb left the game win an injury in the 15th minute of the game and returned in the 55th minute. Notre Dame had a pair of first-half shots bounce off the crossbar, one by freshman Ashley Dryer in the 25th minute and another by junior All-American Anne Makinen in the 40th minute.
Makinen failed to record a point for just the second time this season, snapping the Irish record of 12 consecutive games with at least one point that she set against Wisconsin on Wednesday.
