April 15, 2006

Final Stats

Washington, D.C. – The eighth-ranked Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team had been down this road before, taking a highly ranked Georgetown team to overtime, only to come up short on the scoreboard. This time, the Hoyas’ top scorer, Coco Stanwick, scored her fourth goal of the game to snap a 10-10 tie 38 seconds into the sudden-death overtime to give fourth-ranked Georgetown an 11-10 win over the Irish at the Multi-Sport Field Saturday afternoon.

The Irish had rallied from a three-goal deficit in the second half to tie the game at 7-7 and went on to take a 10-8 lead with 7:05 left in the game only to see the Hoyas score the last two goals of regulation for the 10-10 tie. After six scoreless minutes in the first two overtime stanzas, Stanwick was able to score when she deflected a pass by Sara Zorzi past Notre Dame goalkeeper Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) for the win.

Senior Crysti Foote (Sr., Suffern, N.Y.) led the Irish with two goals and three assists in the game, setting several school records for the season and for her career. Freshman Jillian Byers (Northport, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist while Caitlin McKinney (So., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) had two goals and two assists for her four-point afternoon. Kaki Orr (Jr., Darien, Conn.), Jane Stoeckert (Fr., Mendham, N.J.) and Heather Ferguson (So., Newtown Square, Pa.) had single goals for Notre Dame.

Stanwick led Georgetown’s goal scorers with four goals and Zorzi added five assists for the Hoyas. Paige Andrews and Patty Piotrowicz each had two goals while Lucy Poole, Stephanie Zodtner and Jordan Trautman had single goals in the victory.

The overtime loss leaves the Irish with a 10-3 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Georgetown improves to 9-2 on the year and more importantly, 3-0 in league action. Each team has two more BIG EAST contests remaining. Notre Dame falls to 0-7 in the all-time series with Georgetown. In 2003, the Irish led the Hoyas 13-10 with less than three minutes remaining only to see Georgetown score the last three goals to tie it at 13-13 and then out score Notre Dame in over time for a 16-15 win at Moose Krause Stadium.

The two teams traded six goals in the first half for a 3-3 score at halftime. McKinney scored the opening goal of the game at 23:33 and the Irish went ahead 2-0 on Ferguson’s goal at 18:38.

Andrews broke through for Georgetown converting Zorzi’s first assist of the game with 11:29 left in the half. Byers gave Notre Dame a 3-1 lead with 7:56 left only to see Stanwick score her first two goals at 6:38 and 1:30 for the 3-3 score after 30 minutes of play.

Foote, who had two assists in the first half scored her 50th goal of the season just 12 seconds into the second half for a 4-3 Irish lead. That goal tied the Notre Dame single-season goal record set in 1999 by Lael O’Shaughnessy `01.

Georgetown then ran off four straight goals over a 7:19 period to take a 7-4 lead with 21:20 left in the game. Piotrowicz (28:39), Poole, a free-position goal at 24:31, Andrews (23:17) and Zodtner (21:20) gave the Hoyas, the top defensive team in the BIG EAST, a three-goal lead.

The Irish answered with three goals of their own- two by Byers – in a 6:50 span. Foote set up Byers at 20:34 to make it 7-5. Byers then set up Stoeckert at 18:10 before McKinney found Byers in front for the game-tying goal at 13:44 and a 7-7 score.

Piotrowicz put Georgetown ahead 8-7 with her second goal of the game at 11:39, but the Irish again ran off three in a row for a 10-8 lead.

Foote picked up her single-season record 51st goal unassisted at 10:48 to tie the game at 8-8. Orr scored off McKinney’s second assist of the day at 9:08 and McKinney closed the Irish scoring with her second goal of the game with 7:05 left for the two-goal lead. Foote’s five points in the game broke the school’s single-season point record of 75, passing Meredith Simon’s `04 mark of 74 and set in 2004. She also became the Irish career-point getter with 198, passing Danielle Shearer’s `03 mark of 196.

The Hoyas weren’t done though. Stanwick picked up her third goal of the game with 6:12 left and Trautman got the game-tying goal with 2:41 left in the contest. That set up Stanwick’s overtime game winner.

Georgetown out shot Notre Dame, 39-21, in the game, including 8-1 in overtime. Dixon finished with 12 saves for the Irish while Maggie Koch had six saves for the Hoyas.

Notre Dame returns to action on Sunday, April 23 when the Irish travel to Piscataway, N.J., for a BIG EAST game versus Rutgers. Game time at Yurcak Field is set for 12:00 noon. The game is the final regular-season road contest for the Irish who close out the 2006 schedule with a pair of home games.
