NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The eighth-ranked Irish women’s lacrosse team opened its home schedule on a high note Saturday with a 15-10 win over Duquesne at the Loftus Sports Center.
Notre Dame improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Dukes fell to 0-3.
Junior Kailene Abt led the Irish with four points on four goals, while sophomore Maggie Tamasitis added four assists. Senior Gina Scioscia, junior Shaylyn Blaney and freshman Jenny Granger each added two goals, and junior Ansley Stewart, sophomore Megan Sullivan and sophomore Kate Newall notched one goal and one assist a piece. Junior Kaitlin Keena and freshman Betsy Mastropieri each tallied one goal, while sophomore Flannery Nangle added an assist for Notre Dame.
Duquesne’s Katie Rekart totaled four points on three goals and an assist, and Meghan Frederick notched three goals on the night. Cailin Colegrove scored twice for the Dukes, while Kathleen McNish tallied one goal and an assist and Casey Denk recorded a goal.
Blaney put the Irish on the board first with an unassisted goal with 28:12 left in the first period. Frederick answered quickly for the Dukes, tying the match at 1-1 just three minutes later.
Notre Dame rattled off four straight, including two from Scioscia, to take a 5-1 lead with just under nine minutes gone in the first half. Duquesne rallied to put four more on the board and tie the game at 5-5 with 14:19 left. Abt broke the tie with just under 14 minutes left, before Granger put the Irish up 7-5 with 7:02 left in the stanza.
Rekart was able to pull Duquesne within one before the Irish scored four straight to end the frame and take an 11-6 lead into the lockerroom. Granger converted a free position shot to start the rally with 4:57 left and Blaney, Stewart and Keena all found the back of the net within the next 1:57.
Abt opened the second period with two straight goals off assists from Tamasitis to extend the Irish lead to 13-6. McNish, Denk and Rekart added to the Dukes total to make it a 13-9 game with 15:14, but Mastropieri and Sullivan put the Irish back up by six with 14:36 left. Duquesne’s Colegrove notched the final goal of the night at 12:47 to make it a 15-10 game.
The Irish out shot the Dukes 44-17. Freshman goalkeeper Ellie Hilling saw 60:00 in the goal, recording four saves on the night. Duquesne’s Sara Beckstead notched 19 saves in 60:00 of work.
The Irish return to the Loftus Sports Center March 7 for a noon matchup with Dartmouth.
