NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 6/8 Georgetown Hoyas scored six unanswered goals to open the second period to edge the No. 9/10 Irish women’s lacrosse team, 14-12, Friday evening at the Loftus Sports Center.
The loss snapped Notre Dame’s seven-game win streak. The Irish are now 8-2 on the season and 4-2 against ranked opponents.
Jillian Byers led the Irish with four goals and one assist, while Gina Scioscia totaled three goals and an assist. Kailene Abt and Shaylyn Blaney each added two goals, Ansley Stewart chipped in one goal and Megan Sullivan notched one assist.
Jacqueline Giles led the Hoyas with four goals. Ashby Kaestner and Molly Ford added three goals each, while Sarah Seats notched two goals and one assist. Jordy Kirr totaled two goals, and Jordan Trautman and Katie Burton each chipped in one assist.
Scioscia put the Irish on the board first with an unassisted goal just 40 seconds into the game. Georgetown answered quickly as Ford scored with 29:07 left to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams traded goals before Byers scored twice to give the Irish a 4-2 lead. Kaestner tied the game at 4-4 with two goals of her own, but Notre Dame ended the first period on a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 lead into the break.
Georgetown opened the second half by scoring six unanswered goals to go up 11-8. Abt gave the Irish their first goal of the period with just over 16:00 left. After two Hoya goals, Blaney cut the Georgetown lead to 13-10 with 6:07 remaining.
Giles scored the Hoyas’ 14th goal of the night with 3:27 left in the second period. Abt and Byers cut Georgetown’s lead to two with just over two minutes remaining, but the Irish could not find the net again, ending the game with a 14-12 score.
Caitlin Formby got the win in goal for Georgetown, recording 11 saves in 56:43. Erin Goodman took the loss for Notre Dame, allowing 14 goals with five saves in 60:00.
The Irish return to the Loftus Sports Center Sunday to host No. 13/13 Loyola in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
