SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame’s Joe Dusbabek scored on the power play with 12 minutes left to play but Miami’s Mike Glumac nudged home a goal six minutes later, as the Irish and RedHawks skated to a 2-2 tie in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse.
Notre Dame (2-5-1, 1-4-1 CCHA) again provide strong on the penalty kill, stopping all six Miami power plays and 14-of-14 for the weekend series (the Irish won Thursday’s game, 5-2).
Miami (4-2-2, 1-1-2 CCHA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and enjoyed a 27-20 edge in shots, but Irish freshman Tony Zasowski again turned in a solid effort by making 25 saves (including eighth in the third period and five in overtime).
Miami opened the scoring midway through the first period, after senior center Dustin Whitecotton won a left-side faceoff and slid the puck back to the top of the circle. Freshman defenseman Matt Medvecz then sent a rising shot over the glove hand of Irish freshman Tony Zasowski for his second goal of the series (11:14).
Notre Dame notched the equalizer at the midpoint of the second period, on the second goal of the season from sophomore center Brett Henning. Freshman right wing John Wroblewski notched his first point of the season with an outlet pass from mid-ice towards the left boards for senior left wing Andy Jurkowski, who then slid a pass into the slot. Henning stopped just shy of the crease before lifting a backhanded shot over senior goaltender Ken Marsch’s left shoulder (10:13).
The Irish surged ahead in the third period on Dusbabek’s second goal in as many nights, with a strong individual effort from freshman defenseman Evan Nielsen setting up the score. Nielsen passed from behind the Miami net to the bottom of the left circle but freshman center Connor Dunlop was knocked off the puck. Nielsen then lunged forward as he was being taken down from behind and swiped the puck across the goalmouth.
Dusbabek was waiting at the bottom of the right circle and flicked a shot into the right side of the net before Marsch could recover (7:56).
With the clock ticking under seven minutes, Gumlac took the puck from two Irish players in the right corner and walked in before nudging the puck towards the center of the crease. Zasowski tried to smother the puck but it slid under his glove and into the net for a 2-2 game (13:31).
NOTES: Notre Dame still has scored just one first-period goal this season (vs. Union) while allowing eight goals in the first period ? Medvecz also scored in Thursday’s 5-2 loss to Notre Dame … Miami senior forward Gregor Krajnc left the game at the eight-minute mark with a knee injury (he is MU’s leading goal scorer, with six) … Jurkowski is riding a career-best, three-game point streak. He also scored goals in the 4-2 loss to Ferris State and in the 5-2 win over Miami. … Dusbabek has scored in each of the past two games.
