Several current and former Notre Dame baseball players are competing this summer as member of teams on varying levels throughout the nation. That group includes 15 current Irish players in collegiate summer leagues and 12 former ND players who remain active in professional baseball (see complete lists below).

Five Notre Dame players have competed in the 2001 Cape Cod League-the nation’s premier wooden-bat summer league-led by junior-to-be RF Brian Stavisky and rising senior C Paul O’Toole. Both players were starters in the 2000 Cape Cod League All-Star Game, with Stavisky returning to the Hyannis Mets while O’Toole has shifted from the Brewster Whitecaps to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. 2B Steve Sollmann also is a member of Yarmouth-Dennis-after his impressive freshman season at ND-while rising senior 3B/C Andrew Bushey opened the summer with Yarmouth-Dennis but has returned to Notre Dame for shoulder surgery. Rising senior DH Matt Bok was a late addition to the Bourne Braves, joining the team in mid-July.

Senior-to-be CF Steve Stanley is spending the summer close to his native Columbus Ohio, as one of three Irish players on the Delaware (Ohio) Cows of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. Rising junior righthander Peter Ogilvie also has remained close to home, as one of two Irish players on the Bluff City Bombers of the Central Illinois Collegiate League.

Rising senior RHP Matt Buchmeier has returned to the Hays (Kan.) Larks of the Jayhawk League, where he is joined by Irish junior-to-be RHP J.P. Gagne and rising sophomore 1B Joe Thaman.

Three senior members of Notre Dame’s 2001 squad have moved on to the professional ranks: SS Alec Porzel (Lowell Spinners), RHP Danny Tamayo (Spokane Indians) and RHP Aaron Heilman (yet to sign as 1st-round draft pick of the New York Mets). Porzel signed as a 13th-round selection of the Boston Red Sox while Tamayo-who had a fifth year of eligibility remaining-opted to sign with the Kansas City Royals as their 10th-round selection (see quote from Tamayo below).

Three former Notre Dame players were on opening-day Major League rosters: IF Craig Counsell (Arizona Diamondbacks), LHP Chris Michalak (Toronto Blue Jays) and RHP Christian Parker (New York Yankees).

DANNY TAMAYO: “I owe my whole career to my coaches at Notre Dame and (athletic trainer) Mike Bean for how they helped me get through my (elbow) injury and how they helped me handle my situation (“Tommy John” reconstructive surgery). I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for them. … Coach (Paul) Mainieri stood by me for the entire four years and really helped me develop as a pitcher and as a person . (Pitching) coach (Brian) O’Connor also helped me develop as a person while helping me develop mechanically as a pitcher. He helped me develop a mindset that is needed to win at the college and professional level and hopefully that’s what is going to help me in the future. … I loved every minute I was at Notre Dame but just thought this was the right time for me to start my pro career and I had an opportunity that I just didn’t want to pass up.”
