SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Notre Dame men’s soccer team used three different goal scorers to defeat BIG EAST Blue Division foe Seton Hall 3-1 on Tuesday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field. The victory improved the Fighting Irish to 7-4-3 overall and 4-2-0 in league play.
Senior forward Steven Perry (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuinness) tallied his team-best ninth goal of the season, while junior midfielders Michael Rose (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Brendan King (Naperville, Ill./Edison Academic Center [Fla.]) also scored for the Irish. Freshman forward Harrison Shipp (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) collected two assists to move his team-leading assist total to six for the season. Perry also picked up an assist.
Notre Dame jumped on top in the 21st minute as Perry scored from 10 yards out off a pass from Shipp. The Fighting Irish led 1-0 at halftime.
“I thought we were a little slow in the first half,” stated Irish head coach Bobby Clark. “I thought we played a little deep in our end and couldn’t get the ball into their half of the field.”
The Irish broke the match open with two goals within the first 14 minutes of the second half. Rose netted his first goal of the season in the 56th minute on an assist from Shipp. King made it 3-0 in the 59th minute as he took a long pass from Perry and scored from close range. It was King’s second goal of the campaign.
Seton Hall (3-10-1, 1-5-0) cracked the scoring column in the 75th minute on a Brayan Martinez goal.
“We upped the tempo in the second half and we were very good,” added Clark. “It was great to see our two wide midfielders (Rose and King) score crucial goals. We scored the two goals early and we could have had more. They (Seton Hall) got the goal late and it raised their spirits, but I was never worried that we wouldn’t finish the game.”
The Fighting Irish held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Seton Hall gained 11 corner kicks compared to five for Notre Dame. Senior goalkeeper Philip Tuttle (Hooksett, N.H./Brewster Academy) improved his record to 4-2-1 this season by making four saves. Michael Kuzan also had four saves for the Pirates.
Notre Dame will conclude its three-game BIG EAST road trip on Friday at No. 5 Connecticut. Kickoff against the Huskies is slated for 8:00 p.m. (ET) at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. The match will be aired live on Fox Soccer Channel.
