JAMAICA, N.Y. — The Notre Dame men’s soccer team suffered its third straight setback as the Irish dropped a 4-1 decision at St. John’s. With the loss, Notre Dame fell to 8-7-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the BIG EAST, while the 13-ranked Red Storm improve to 9-3-3 and 5-1-3 in league play.
Michael Taylor scored St. Johns’ first two goals of the game. He tallied the first goal off assists from Carlo Acquista and Medufia Kulego at 31:27 as the Red Storm held a 1-0 halftime advantage.
Taylor’s second goal came at the 60:35 mark when his 15-yard blast got past Irish goalkeeper Gerick Short (Mobile, Ala.). The goal was assisted by Acquista and Oscar Arauz. Jeff Matteo gave the Red Storm a 3-0 advantage at 72:15 when he scored off a feed from Medufia Kulego.
Freshman Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) finally put the Irish on the scoreboard when he stole a pass at midfield and blasted a shot from 20 yards out..
The final St. John’s goal was scored by Alberto Duenas from 30 yards out off an assist from Acquista, his third of the game, at 82:09.
Notre Dame was outshot 14-3 in the game.
The Irish return to action at Alumni Field on Friday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m. when they play their final regular season home game against Georgetown.
