Notre Dame Earns No. 2 seed in 2001 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship

Nov. 6, 2001

Notre Dame, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s soccer team has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2001 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship. The Irish, ranked 23rd in the NSCAA/adidas poll and 19th in the Soccer America ranking, will host No. 7 seed Georgetown in a quarterfinal match on Sat., Nov. 10 at Alumni Field. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Notre Dame, which owns an 11-5 overall record, finished with a 7-3 league mark this season to earn its highest seed ever in the conference champioship. The seven wins marked the most by an Irish squad since becoming a BIG EAST Conference member in 1995. Coach Bobby Clark’s squad tied for second in the final regular season standings with St. John’s, but earned the second seed by virtue of conference wins. The Red Storm, ranked sixth nationally, finished with a 6-1-3 league mark.

Notre Dame will be making its fifth quarterfinal appearance in the BIG EAST championship. The Irish hosted a quarterfinal match in 1996 (defeated Georgetown 2-1) after earning the third seed in the tournament. That season, Notre Dame won its first and only BIG EAST tournament title.

Notre Dame, which has missed playing in the championship on just two occasions (’95 and 2000), owns a 4-3 record in tournament play and is 2-2 in quarterfinal matches.

Connecticut won the ’01 regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The top eight teams in the final regular-season standing earn a berth in the tournament, with the top four seeds hosting quarterfinal games on either Nov. 10 or 11. Selection and seeding for the tournament is based on regular season finish. Connecticut will serve as the host for the semifinals and championship final on Nov. 16 & 18.

Georgetown finished with a 6-4-0 record in league play and is 9-8-1 overall heading into Saturday night’s matchup with Notre Dame. The Hoyas tied for sixth with Boston College in the final regular season standings, but earned the seventh seed by virtue of the Eagles’ regular-season win.

The Irish and Hoyas will be meeting for the second time at Notre Dame this season. Clark’s squad prevailed 3-1 earlier this season on Oct. 5. Overall, Notre Dame leads the series 5-4-1. The Hoyas are 2-3 in five games played at Alumni Field.
