NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame stayed focused through a pair of rain delays to earn a pair of wins over Seton Hall in BIG EAST Conference softball action Wednesday at Melissa Cook Stadium. The Irish improved to 29-13 overall and 10-3 in league play with the sweep, bettering the Pirates (20-27, 2-14) by respective scores of 8-0 and 5-1.
With first pitch slated for noon (ET), game one got off to a late start due to rain in the South Bend area and the twinbill came to an end over eight hours later.
Laura Winter (20-8) picked up two wins from the circle and held Seton Hall to one hit in a five-inning win to begin the day. Winter walked one and struck out 11 as Notre Dame recorded nine hits.
Alexa Maldonado went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs as Dani Miller belted a two-run homer during a five-run second frame to put the game out of reach. The round-tripper was the first of two for Miller on the day.
Lauren Stuhr scored twice in game one as Casey Moses (6-8) gave up seven runs – three earned – while taking the loss after lasting 2.0 innings.
A big fifth inning in game two – including Miller’s bomb to center – boosted Notre Dame to victory.
Miller has now homered in three straight games and five of the last seven.
Thornton had two hits in the nightcap with Miller and Amy Buntin adding two RBI apiece.
Notre Dame out-hit Seton Hall, 7-6, and would cruise for the win after holding a 5-1 lead after the fifth.
Winter pitched 6.0 innings and gave up one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Brittany O’Donnell closed the books on the Pirates by striking out two in the top of the seventh.
Danielle DeStatso (5-11) gave up five earned runs with five strikeouts in the loss.
Brittany Hammer and Kristen Kaelin each had two hits for the Pirates.
Notre Dame travels to Providence this weekend for a three-game league series.
