COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Notre Dame men’s tennis team came ready to compete on the second day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center and Racquet Club of Columbus.
To start off the day, sophomores Eric Schnurrenberger and Kenneth Sabacinski both won their final round of the qualifying bracket, gaining a spot in the singles main draw. Sabacinski defeated the No. 1 seed in the qualifying draw, Harry Jadun of Michigan State, 6-1, 6-1. Schnurrenberger beat Matt Lynch of NIU, 6-1, 6-3. Their victories brought the total of Irish players in the main draw up to eight.
Notre Dame continued its success in the afternoon as the round of 64 matches began. After the first round of matches, five Irish players are still playing for the championship.
Freshman Josh Hagar beat Michigan State’s Foreman, 7-5, 6-1. Fifth seed sophomore Quentin Monaghan took down Amir of NIU, 6-1, 6-0. Sabacinski won again, defeating Linders of Michigan State for his fourth victory of the weekend, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Senior Ryan Bandy battled back from an early deficit to beat Oliviera of Illinois State, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Finally, second seed senior Greg Andrews defeated Baev of Northwestern, 6-3, 7-6.
Freshman Eddy Covalschi fell to Christ of Ohio State, 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Alex Lawson lost a heartbreaker to Lied 6-7, 7-5, 7-5. Schnurrenberger also fell in the first round to Jesse of Illinois, 7-5, 6-4.
