Five members of the Notre Dame women’s golf team competed in events during the summer of 2005. Among group was junior Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill.), who participated in the USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship (Aug. 1-7) and senior Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash.), a competitor in the NCAA All-Star Golf Tour in Asia. The other student-athletes that teed it up in summer events were senior Suzie Hayes (Dublin, Ireland) and freshmen Lisa Maunu (Ontario, Canada) and Courtney Sullivan (Greshman, Ore.).
Nakazaki fired rounds of 78 and 80 at the USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur, which was played at the par 72 Settindown Creek Course of Ansley Golf Club. The junior began her summer by placing first at the FIDRA Collegiate Tour event (May 29-30) with a two round total of 148. She followed that up with a second-place showing at another FIDRA Collegiate Tour tournament by posting a 36-hole total of 149. At the WWGA 105th National Amateur Championship (June 20-26), she made it to the quarterfinals with rounds of 74 and 77 at Purdue’s Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. She won her second FIDRA Collegiate Tour event of the summer on July 26th as she carded rounds of 75 and 73.
Brophy competed in the NCAA All-Star Golf Tour that took her to Asia for a month. Only 10 collegiate golfers from Division I schools were selected to participate. The squad spent one week in South Korea, two weeks in Japan and then the final week was spent in Hong Kong and China.
Hayes returned to her native Ireland to compete in the Irish Ladies Stroke-play Championships, which featured a very impressive field of international players. She placed 12th with a 14-over par three-round total of 233 (79-76-78) at the par 73 course. The senior also competed at the Irish Ladies Close Championships. Hayes fired a 12-over par 162 (81-81) and was defeated in match play competition by Kent State’s Martina Gillen.
Sullivan had a busy summer as well by competing in events in the Northwest. She fired rounds of 81 and 77 to place sixth at the Oregon Golf Associations Tournament of Champions. Sullivan qualified for that event by winning the Oregon Golf Association Women’s Public Link Championships last year. She carded a two-round total of 166 at the Portland City Women’s Stroke Play Championship, which was held at the Heron Lakes Golf Course. Sullivan also played in a qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship and was the first alternate after shooting an 81.
