NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame women’s golf team will wrap up its fall season this weekend with its second consecutive trip to the state of North Carolina for the Landfall Tradition. The tournament will be hosted by the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, with 18 teams competing on the par-72, 6,204-yard Pete Dye Course.
The event begins today with a practice round, with the first of three rounds beginning tomorrow, Friday Oct. 25.
“Wilmington tournament is one of the best tournaments in the country,” says head coach Susan Holt. “It is always a field of top ranked teams and the golf course is a great test. The local support of the community is like no other event in the country.”
Holt isn’t kidding. Of the 18 teams in the tournament, 10 are in Golfstat’s top-25 teams. The course will feature Alabama (10), Arizona (7), Clemson (13), Duke (4), Iowa State (14), Michigan State (21), Mississippi, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, N.C. State (15), Notre Dame, Ohio State (23), Oklahoma State (3), Purdue, South Carolina (19), Virginia and Wake Forest.
The Irish felt the sting of disappointment two weeks ago when they traveled to the Tar Heel Invitational and came in 17th place. Holt says the Irish can play better than they’ve shown-it just comes down to execution and teamwork.
“We need to get off to a solid start,” she explains. “We need to have a great team effort for three rounds. We really have not done that yet this semester and it has hurt our ranking considerably. We need to be consistent from day to day. A player may be off there game one day but someone else needs to have their back and we have not had that happen much so far this year. It’s been very disappointing because we are better than the product we are putting out there in competition. We have to step up and execute when in matters.”
In preparation for the tournament, Holt says Notre Dame has been focusing on short and putting in practice as well as getting onto the course. Spending time on and around all the greens will hopefully produce the low scores the Irish are capable of.
