Notre Dame Men's Soccer Wins Second Straight With 3-0 Win At West Virginia

Morgantown, West Va. – Sophomore forward Devon Prescod (Marietta, Ga.) scored two goals and dished off an assist in leading the Notre Dame men’s soccer team to a 3-0 BIG EAST road win at West Virginia. The Irish tallied all three of their goals in the final 23:50 of the contest in posting their second straight victory.

With the win, Notre Dame improves to 5-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in league play, while the Mountaineers suffer their fifth consecutive setback to fall to 3-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the conference.

It was the first career multiple-goal game for Prescod who headed into the contest with just one career goal to his credit.

Junior forward Erich Braun (Franfurt, Germany) had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Chad Riley (Houston, Texas) also added an assist. Braun has now scored a goal in every game that the Irish have scored in this season and leads the team in scoring with seven goals and three assists (17 points).

West Virginia outshot Notre Dame 17-8 in the contest and owned a 6-2 advantage on cornerkicks. The Irish, however, made good on their shot attempts in the final 24 minutes of the game.

Prescod tallied his first goal of the season with 23:50 remaining in the game off an assist from Riley. He then added his second goal of the game off an assist from Braun to put the Irish up 2-0 with 13:31 to play in the contest. Braun finished off the scoring with his seventh goal of the season with 5:29 remaining in the game off an assist from Prescod, his second of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Chris Sawyer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), making his fourth straight start, recorded the first complete shutout of his career while also finishing with four saves.

Notre Dame shutout West Virginia for the fifth time in the last six meetings between the two teams. Since the 1995 campaign when the two teams began competing against each other in the BIG EAST Conference, the Irish have outscored the Mountaineers 12-3 in seven meetings and hold a 5-2 advantage in the series.

Notre Dame, in the midst of a three-game road stretch, heads to Blacksburg, Va., for a first-ever meeting with the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sun, Oct. 13 at 1:00 p.m. (EDT).
