Boerne, Texas – The Notre Dame women’s golf team fired the seventh-best round of the day with a 326 total to move into sixth-place at the Baylor-Tapito Springs Shootout on Monday afternoon. That gives the Irish a 36-hole total of 644 and puts them 28 strokes behind tournament leader Missouri as the Tigers have a 616 total after rounds of 311 and 305. The tournament, hosted by Baylor University, is being played at the par 72, 6,007-yard Tapito Springs Resort.
Following Missouri is first day leader Texas Christian as the Horned Frogs are just one stroke off the pace after rounds of 298 and 319 give them a 617 total. The University of Illinois is third with a 621 (311-310) while Baylor is fourth with a 622 (312-310) and Kent State is fifth with a 631 (315-316), 13 strokes ahead of Notre Dame.
Individually, freshman Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash.) had the best round of the day for Notre Dame as she shot a five-over par 77 to go with her opening round 80 for a 13-over par 157. That puts her 14 strokes behind tourney leader DRae Ward of TCU who has a 36-hole total of one-under par 143 (68-75). Ward leads the tournament by three strokes over Missouri’s Kelly Strubinger who has a 146 total after rounds of 71 and 75. Renata Young of Illinois is third with a 148 (76-72) while Randi Gauthier of North Texas is fourth with a 149 (75-74). Heather MacRae of McLellan Community College and Malinda Johnson of Wisconsin are tied for fifth with 153 totals. Both golfers have identical rounds of 76-77.
Following Brophy for the Irish are three golfers in a six-way tie for 33rd overall with 18-over par totals of 163. Senior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wis.) has rounds of 79-84 for her 163. Also in at 163 are Sarah Bassett (Fr., Spokane, Wash.) and Shannon Byrne (Jr., Arlington Heights, Ill.). Bassett has rounds of 78-85 and Byrne has shot 81-82 for the first 36 holes.
Sophomore Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.), playing as an individual entrant, is 50th overall after rounds of 82 and 86 gave her a 168 and freshman Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio) rounds out the Irish contingent as she is tied for 52nd with a 170 (87-83).
Tuesday’s final round of play at the Baylor – Tapito Springs Shootout will begin at 7:30 a.m. (CST) with scheduled tee times.
