MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – The No. 25 Notre Dame women’s golf team fired a three-round total of 886 (+22) to finish fourth at the Canes & Cardinal Classic at the par 72, 6,210-yard Don Shula Golf Resort. Louisville took the team title with an 871 (+7). Notre Dame freshman So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) tied for second among the individuals with an even-par 216.
Monday was supposed to feature the first two rounds of play, yet inclement weather halted competition halfway through the second round. Tuesday’s action began with the remainder of the second round and was followed by the third and final round.
The Fighting Irish were in sixth place following a first-round tally of 298 (+10) on Monday. Notre Dame posted a 299 during the second 18 holes of play before notching a spring-best 289 (+1) in the third round to move into fourth place. The total was also the low mark for any of the 14 teams in the event on the day.
Furman and Georgia State tied for second with identical 884 (+20) totals. Tulsa posted an 888 to follow the Irish and round out the top-five teams. Louisville’s first-round score of 284 (-4) was the low round of the tournament. The Cardinals and Miami co-hosted the event.
Cindy LaCrosse from Louisville copped medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 212 (67-74-71). Her five-under par 67 on Monday was the top round of the tournament. Joining Park in second was Steffi Kirchmayr from the College of Charleston and Christina Jones from South Florida. Park carded scores of 71 and 76 in the first two rounds before closing with a three-under par 69, which tied her low round of the season.
The runner-up finish for Park was her third of the season. She has finished among the top-two individuals in five of nine tournaments during her rookie campaign and has led the Irish on six occasions.
Fellow Notre Dame freshman Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) registered a season-best three-round total of 220 (+4) to tie for 11th. A two-over par 74 in the second round from Conway was sandwiched between season-low marks of 73 in both the first and third rounds.
Irish sophomore Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep) started out with a 78 on Monday yet lowered her second-round total to a 75 and knocked two more shots off that with a third-round 73. Her final tally of 226 (+10) placed her among a six-way tie for 30th.
Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) began the tournament with an 80 before posting identical marks of 74 in the final two rounds. The sophomore finished in a five-way tie at 37th with a 228 (+12).
Junior co-captain Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute) completed the Irish lineup as she shot a 230 (+14), which placed her in a tie at 44th. After carding a 76 and 80 in the first two rounds, respectively, she fired a two-over par 74 in the third round. All five Notre Dame golfers either bested or tied their second-round score during the final 18 holes.
The Fighting Irish will return to the course at the 2008 BIG EAST Championship, which takes place April 20-22 at the Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.
