Notre Dame Posts Nine Singles Wins On First Day of Tom Fallon Invitational

The Notre Dame men’s tennis team posted strong results on day one of their home fall tournament, the Tom Fallon Invitational. The Irish went 9-6 in singles play to open the three day invitational.

Brett Helgeson posted two wins to keep his record perfect at 6-0. The junior defeated Kazuya Komada of Western Michigan 7-5, 6-1 and Santiago Gruter of Indiana 6-0, 6-2.

Freshmen Tyler Davis, Stephen Havens, and Dan Stahl each recorded wins in their first career home matches. Davis was victorious over Purdue’s Paul Foley in come from behind fashion, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11). Havens pushed his record to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over the Boilermakers’ Griffin Nienberg. Stahl recorded his first home win over Eric Ramos, also of Purdue, 6-2, 6-2.

Takashi Yoshii, Sean Corrigan, Santiago Montoya and Graham King also posted victories for Notre Dame. Yoshii defeated Indiana’s Jai Yoon 6-3, 7-5 to record his first victory of the season. Corrigan also posted his initial win of the campaign, a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Eren Turkmenler of Purdue.

Montoya ran his record to 3-2 following a straight set win over Jose Fuenmayor of Purdue, while King recorded a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over the Boilermakers’ DJ Johnson.

Action will resume Saturday morning at 9 AM at the Courtney Tennis Center, with Notre Dame taking the court at 11 AM for singles play and 2:30 PM for doubles play.
