NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team was recently honored as Golf World announced its mid-season awards for the 2007-08 season. Freshman So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) was tabbed as the most surprising female player, while the Fighting Irish were named the most surprising women’s team.
Park led the squad with a 72.53 stroke average over the course of 15 rounds of play during the fall season. If that mark holds up, Park will eclipse the single-season program record of 74.71, which was established by Noriko Nakazaki last season. Park had four top-five finishes and did not place lower than seventh in any of the five tournaments. She finished second in her first collegiate event at the Cougar Classic and followed that up with a victory at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Classic. Park also had a runner-up finish at the season-ending Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate.
As a team, Notre Dame won its first three tournaments of the fall campaign. That marked the first time in the 20-year history of the program that the Irish had ever won three straight events. The Fighting Irish posted a 297.27 scoring average, which is on pace to shatter the school record of 305.46 from last season.
Head coach Susan Holt, who is in her second season with the Fighting Irish, saw her team register a program-record three-round score of 870 (+6) en route to winning the season-opening Cougar Classic in Hanahan, South Carolina. The Irish followed that performance up with wins at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Classic and the Wolverine Invitational.
Notre Dame opens the spring portion of its 2007-08 slate at the Central District Invitational. The tournament takes place February 18 & 19 at the River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla.
