Notre Dame Suffers 1-0 Defeat At IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Irish hit the woodwork twice at Indiana but were unable to find the back of the net in a frustrating 1-0 loss to the Hoosiers on Wednesday evening at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Bryan Dowd had a strong evening in goal, making four saves over the 90 minutes of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish got off to a good start, nearly scoring in the opening 10 minutes of play. Matthew Roou played a pass to an on-rushing Paddy Burns, who rattled the woodwork with a first-time volley.

However, the Hoosiers were the first team on the scoreboard. In the 25th minute the Irish fouled an Indiana player just inside the box, giving the hosts a penalty. IU converted from the spot to take a 1-0 lead.

The two sides traded half chances the rest of the half and the Hoosiers took a 1-0 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Notre Dame continued to create scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 55th minute Kyle Genenbacher laid off a pass just outside the box and Bryce Boneau’s low shot beat the keeper but was denied by the post.

It looked like the Irish found the equalizer in the 71st minute, as a ball over the top found Borso, who fired into the back of the net but the linesman ruled the freshman offside.

On the performance…

“Overall we are a little bit frustrated because parts of the performance were very good. We have to be a little sharper defensively at times. We hit two posts and had a goal called back for an offside call we are not sure of. Overall we are pleased with the performance but we don’t want to be a team that loses close games, we want to be a team that wins close games and that’s where our frustration lies.”
