NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s soccer team survived a 40-minute power outage at Alumni Field and snapped a three-game losing streak as the Irish defeated visiting Northwestern 2-1 in a non-conference match.

Freshman Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) scored both of Notre Dame’s goals to register the first multiple-goal game of his career as the Irish improved to 4-5-1, while the Wildcats remained winless at 0-9.

Detter scored his first goal 13:37 into the contest when he headed in Matt Rosso’s (Churchill, Pa.) corner kick into the left side of net.

Jun Kim knotted the score less than four minutes later when he fired a shot from 20-yards out off feed from Paul Elkins.

The score remained 1-1 until the 47:40 mark of the contest when Detter drilled a 15-yarder from outside the penalty following passes from Filippo Chillemi (Roswell, Calif.) and Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany).

Less than a minute following the goal, the lights on the field went out because of a power outage and the contest was suspended for 40 minutes. Notre Dame, which had been the more aggressive team throughout the contest outshot Northwestern 17-2 in the second half.

The Irish had several opportunities to score, but were denied due to some outstanding goalkeeping by Wildcat goalie Chris Berlin. Berlin made a key save on Braun’s penalty kick at the 62:33 mark in the contest. He finished the game with eight total saves, while the Northwestern team got four back saves from members of its team.

The one-goal decision was the fourth straight for the Irish who entered the game having lost three consecutive one-goal contests at home.

The win concludes a five-game homestand for Notre Dame who will travel to Providence, R.I. on Sun., Oct. 8 for a 1:00 p.m. contest with the Friars in a BIG EAST test. The Irish have just two home games remaining during the regular season and now must play five of its seven remaining contest on the road.
