CLEVELAND, Ohio – In Saturday’s tri-meet action at Busbey Natatorium the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team picked up a pair of wins with victories over host Cleveland State and Miami (Ohio). The Irish beat the Vikings, 132-109, and downed Miami by a 143-100 margin. The Irish are now 3-2 on the season heading into a home meet with Ohio State at the Rolfs Aquatic Center (Nov. 21).
Notre Dame won five of the 13 events. Michael Sullivan was first in a pair of races, as was John Lytle. Andrew Hoffman tacked on first-place points with his strong showing in the 200 Free.
The Irish are now 25-10 all-time against Cleveland State and 22-2 versus the Vikings the direction of head coach Tim Welsh. Notre Dame holds a 4-2 edge in dual-meet wins over Miami after the most recent pounding.
400 Medley Relay: Sullivan, Daniel Rave, Patrick Augustyn and Lytle (3:29.93) finished second, just a few strokes behind Cleveland State … Mitchell Sherman, Joseph Raycroft, Bill Bauman and David Anderson were fifth overall in 3:36.08.
1,000 Free: Mark deSwardt (9:24.64) tagged on the second straight win for the Vikings Andrew Deters (9:38.03) was second and Steven Brus (9:47.04) placed fourth.
200 Free: Hoffman was impressive with a 1:41.89 for first place … Thomas Van Volkenburg was fourth in 1:45.51.
50 Free: The first of Lytle’s wins came when he squeezed past Stephen Grove of Cleveland State … Lytle touched in 20.83 with Grove wrapping second with a 20.94 sprint … Marshall Sherman (21.94) was seventh.
200 Individual Medley: Sullivan showed his versatility by winning the event in 1:55.11, almost two seconds ahead of the next closest competitor … Bauman tried his hand with a 1:58.34 for fifth.
1-meter Diving: Notre Dame took three of the top five spots led by second-place finisher Michael Bulfin (339.95) … Eric Lex (318.95) was fourth and Wesley Villaflor (304.15) dried off with a fifth-place finish.
200 Butterfly: Augustyn (1:56.19) was second for the Irish … Deters (1:57.19) was behind him in fourth.
100 Free: Lytle continued his dominance in the event … he finished in 45.60 for first-place honors … Hoffman was fourth in 46.85.
200 Backstroke: Sullivan (1:51.60) won by over two seconds … Jonathan Whitcomb (2:01.13) was the next highest finisher for the Irish … he was eighth.
500 Free: Brus came through in 4:44.80 for second … behind him was third-place finisher Ryan Belecanech (4:46.24) … Joshua Nosal (4:47.62) was fifth.
3-meter Diving: Lex was third with 354.85 points … Nathan Geary (321.10) was third, just in front of Bulfin’s final count of 316.90.
200 Breast: Rave (2:06.78) was third … Raycroft was just behind him, taking fifth in 2:11.38.
400 Free Relay: Hoffman, Nosal, Van Volkenburg and Lutkus took the bronze with a time of 3:09.31 … Bauman, Kevin Rahill, Marshall Sherman and Patrick Lloyd were fourth in 3:12.18.
