DISTINGUISHED CLINICIANS
The National Soccer Coaching Seminar is proud to announce that Steve Swanson will be this year’s featured clinician. Swanson currently is the head women’s soccer coach at the University of Virginia and also serves as head coach of the United States Under-20 Women’s National Team (including Fighting Irish standouts Mandy Laddish and Cari Roccaro) that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title on Sept. 9.
Swanson recently completed his 13th season at Virginia, where he led the Cavaliers to the third round of the NCAA Championship for the eighth consecutive year. He arrived in Charlottesville in 2000, replacing former U.S. Women’s National Team Coach April Heinrichs.
After previously coaching the U.S. Soccer U-16 and U-18 National Teams from 2000-02, Swanson returned to the U.S. coaching ranks during the past few years as an assistant coach with the U-17, U-18 and U-20 teams before taking over as the U-20 head coach in the summer of 2011.
Swanson then led the U-20 World Cup Team through a challenging qualification process and then on to win the World Cup that was held in Japan this past August and September. After losing to defending champion Germany, 3-0 during group play, the Swanson-led U.S. team gained a measure of revenge in the tournament title match, blanking the heavily-favored Germans, 1-0, to earn the Americans’ third U-20 Women’s World Cup championship.
Swanson currently holds an `A’ license from the United States Soccer Federation. Prior to taking the reins at Virginia, Swanson served as the head coach at Stanford and Dartmouth, working alongside Clark at both schools.
