SOUTH BEND, Ind. – – Powered by Christi Girton’s 16 kills, the BIG EAST-leading Notre Dame volleyball team defeated conference foe Boston College, 15-2, 15-8, 15-10, Saturday afternoon at Power Gym in Chestnut Hill, Mass. With the win, the Irish moved to 13-6 overall and 7-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Eagles dropped to 10-14 overall and 2-5 in the BIG EAST.
Girton was helped offensively by senior Mary Leffers’ (Tampa, Fla.) seven kills, while sophomore Kristy Kreher (Birmingham, Mich.) added six kills. Kreher and junior Jo Jameyson (Alvin, Texas) led the Irish on defense with eight digs apiece and Denise Boylan had 17 assists.
After rolling through game one, 15-2, the Irish were behind in game two, 5-8, but battled back to tie the score at 8-8. With sophomore Marcie Bomhack (Waukesha, Wis.) serving, Notre Dame then reeled off five unanswered points to take a 13-8 lead, ultimately winning, 15-8. The Irish grabbed game three 15-10 to win the hour-long match.
Boston College was led by Julia El-Hag’s six kills, but the Eagles were outhit (.366 to .020) and outblocked (11-3) by the Irish.
Notre Dame will continue its short trip back east with another match Sunday, Oct. 31, against BIG EAST foe Providence at 1 p.m.
