NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf head coach Debby King has announced the team’s 2005 fall schedule. Highlights of the six-match slate include trips to Las Vegas, Nev., and Augusta, Ga. The Fighting Irish are coming off the program’s first two NCAA tournament appearances and will look to make it three straight trips as they welcome back an experienced and accomplished lineup. The 2006 spring schedule has not been finalized and will be released at a later date.
The Fighting Irish will open the fall portion of their docket by hosting the sixth annual Notre Dame Women’s Invitational at the Warren Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11. The Irish shot well at the tournament last season, yet placed third as the competition was solid with Iowa State and Washington State claiming the top two spots.
The 2005 version of the Lady Northern Invitational will be held at the Indiana University Course on Saturday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 25. Last year, the event was held at the University of Michigan Golf Course with the Irish tying for eighth. The tournament annually features several of the top teams from the Midwest.
Notre Dame stays in state yet again for the prestigious Shoot-Out at The Legends, which will be held Monday, Oct. 10 and Tuesday, Oct. 11 at The Legends of Indiana course in Franklin, Ind. The Irish were victorious at the event in the fall of 2004.
A trek to Fayetteville, Ark. during the University’s fall break awaits the Irish in mid-October. The Lady Razorback Invitational, which is hosted by the University of Arkansas, will be held Sunday, Oct. 16 through Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Pinnacle Country Club. Notre Dame placed fifth at the tournament one season ago.
The Irish will then embark on a trip out west to take part in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Anthem Country Club. The University of Nevada-Las Vegas will serve as the host of the event, which will take place Monday, Oct. 31 through Wednesday, Nov. 2.
The team will conclude the fall slate at the Lady Jaguar Invitational in Augusta, Ga. Augusta State University will host the event at the Forest Hills Golf Club Monday, Nov. 7 and Tuesday, Nov. 8.
“We went to the Lady Northern, the Shoot-Out at the Legends and the Lady Razorback last year and they are all top tournaments,” states King. “We are excited to be invited back to those again this year. The Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown is a new tournament for us. It’s a good, top-notch event that will be a big one for us. The Lady Jaguar is a smaller tournament that we hope to do well at so we can end the (fall) season on a good note.”
Notre Dame returns its top two stroke average leaders from the 2004-05 campaign. Senior-to-be Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) led the Irish last year with a 76.46 stroke average in 35 rounds of play. Rising junior Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) posted an average of 76.54 during her sophomore season and her current career average of 76.44 places her first all-time in program history. They helped the Irish to a school record-tying four tournament victories one year ago.
