The Irish return to action against BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic division opponent West Virginia at 7:30 p.m., on Fri., Oct. 8, at Alumni Field.
Notre Dame outshot Michigan 16-11 in the game and 6-3 in the first half while playing against a stiff wind. The physical first half saw the Wolverines commit five fouls before the Irish recorded their first shot in the 22nd minute on a header by senior All-American Jenny Streiffer that was high over the crossbar. Heft converted Notre Dame?s next shot when she won the ball at the box of the box, turned and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net past Michigan goalkeeper Carissa Stewart for a 1-0 lead at 27:23.
Michigan senior forward Marie Spaccarotella scored the first Wolverine goal against the Irish after three previous shutout losses when she lofted a shot with the wind behind her from just outside the top left corner of the box. The ball sailed into the upper right corner of the net above a diving Beene at 34:49 to knot the score at 1-1.
Makinen scored what would be the game-winning goal at 42:55 when freshman Nancy Mikacenic touched the ball from five yards out to Makinen on the right side from five yards. Makinen blasted a shot into the right corner for a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
Makinen scored her second goal in a span of 4:30 and gave the Irish a 3-1 advantage just 2:25 into the second half when she finished a give-and-go with junior Monica Gonzalez at 47:25. Makinen dropped the ball to Gonzalez from 10 yards beyond the box and made a run into the box from the right corner. Makinen received the ball from the Gonzalez on the right side from 15 yards and scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season. Erikson closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute from two yards when she booted a cross from sophomore Lindsey Jones that slipped through Stewart?s hands.
