NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A day after upsetting 11th-ranked Northwestern, the 23rd-ranked Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team finished a perfect dual-meet weekend with a convincing win over visiting University of Illinois, 183.5-116.5, Saturday evening at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. With the victory, the Irish moved to a perfect 9-0 overall in 1999-2000.
Against Illinois, Notre Dame junior All-American Carrie Nixon won four events, including the 50 and 100 freestyle, the 200 individual medley relay and as a member of the winning 400 medley relay, which opened the meet by defeating second-place Illinois by more than five seconds. Sophomore Kelly Hecking won three events for the Irish, while sophomore Allison Lloyd and seniors Elizabeth Barger, Alison Newell and Gina Ketelhohn all were double-event winners. Senior Shannon Suddarth also picked up a win in the 200 breaststroke as did junior Kristen Van Saun in the 500 freestyle.
Emily Wang ( 1:53.45 – 200 freestyle) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Traci Bollinger, Marcie Black, Wang and Betsy Nagel ( 3:31.09) posted wins for Illinois.
The Irish will put their unbeaten dual-meet record on the line when they play host to 10th-ranked Michigan, Saturday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. in Rolfs Aquatic Center.
