COLUMBUS, Ohio – Six season best times in as many events were recorded Sunday as the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team capped off the Ohio State Invitational at McCorkle Pavilion. The Irish placed fourth among the 12-team field with 398 points upon the conclusion of the three-day event. Ohio State (1,382.5) led all teams in the scoring column with Minnesota (873.5) and Penn State (649) rounding out the top spots. Cleveland State (194) was fifth and Purdue (133) was sixth.
Notre Dame has a bit of a break until its next competitive action. The team will travel to Puerto Rico for its annual winter training session and then return to the mainland for a Jan. 10 dual meet at Louisville.
1,650 Free: Tapping in for 11th was Andrew Deters (15:35.14) … Steven Brus was just behind him, taking the next spot with a 15:39.41 effort … Deters’ effort was the fastest of any Irish swimmer on the season.
200 Back: The team’s fastest time of the season came off the stroke of Michael Sullivan (1:49.98) … he was 11th and Christopher Wills (1:50.72) was 14th … Jonathan Whitcomb’s top time was 1:51.64 which he recorded in the finals … Mitchell Sherman went 1:51.09.
100 Free: John Lytle recorded a team-best 44.78 in the finals, good for sixth … Lytle went 45.04 in the prelims … behind him in the standings was Danny Lutkus (45.79) … Joshua Nosal finished the final round in 46.02.
200 Breast: By bettering the team’s previous season best by over three seconds, Daniel Rave (2:03.09) placed seventh … Brian Maloy was 14th with a 2:15.79 and Ryan Belecanech (2:16.84) was 15th overall.
200 Fly: Cutting through in a season-best 1:49.07 and 1:49.12 for sixth was MacKenzie LeBlanc … Patrick Augustyn’s best time was 1:49.94.
400 Free Relay: With a fifth-place effort the quartet of Lytle, Lutkus, Nosal and Thomas Van Volkenburg clocked in at a season-best 3:01.08.
