NORMAN, Okla. – A solid opening round by senior Kelli Oride paced the University of Notre Dame women’s golf team to a share of seventh place following the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Saturday at the Belmar Golf Club. The Fighting Irish shot a combined team score of 290 to tie with Arkansas at 10-over-par after the tournament’s first day.
Oride made four total birdies during her opening round, including three in a six-hole stretch during the back nine, as part of a one-under-par 69 to tie for fifth place. Oride shook off a bogey at the par 4 14th hole with a three at No. 15 to square her round at level par, making the turn with an even score of 34.
The Lihue, Hawaii native made a strong start on her back nine with birdies at the par 4 first, par 5 third and par 3 sixth holes to move within one shot of the tournament lead at three-under-par. Two inward bogeys knocked Oride back to a final nine score of 35 and a day one 69. Oride’s 2.80 stroke average on the par 3 holes at Belmar Golf Club is tied for the second-best total in the field.
Freshman Kari Bellville made three birdies on her opening nine, shaking off a double bogey in the middle of the back side with eight pars in nine holes on the way to a one-over 71 and a share of 22nd place. Bellville responded to two early bogeys with back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15 to jump back to even on her front nine. An outward birdie at the par 3 17th hole gave the Granger, Ind. native a one-under 34 at the turn.
A lone double bogey at the par 4 fifth hole was Bellville’s only blemish on the back nine, as the Notre Dame newcomer came in with a 38 (+2) for her best collegiate round of her career with a 71.
Junior Talia Campbell checked in with a four-over-par 74 to tie for 44th place, while sophomore Jordan Ferreira posted a first round 76 (tied for 67th place). Senior Ashley Armstrong rounded out the Notre Dame lineup with a 78 on day one.
Mississippi State logged the only subpar round of the day amongst all 17 teams in the Schooner Fall Classic field, posting a score of three-under-par 277 to open a five-shot lead. SMU checked in with a 282 (+2) in solo second place, with Texas A&M and LSU tied for third place at three-over-par 283. California posted a team total of 285 (+5) for fifth place.
