SECAUCUS, New Jersey — Peter Solomon became the 109th Notre Dame baseball player selected in the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday afternoon when he was selected by the Houston Astros.
The Astros made the right-hander the 121st pick overall by taking him with the 16th pick in the fourth round. Solomon greatly improved his draft stock during his three seasons in the blue and gold after the Ellicott City, Maryland, native was taken in the 21st round by the San Diego Padres out of high school in 2014.
Solomon threw 131.0 innings in his Irish career, posting a 3.85 ERA and 8-10 record while striking out 151 batters. He became a key cog in the backend of the bullpen as a junior, making three saves with an ERA of 3.83 while striking out 61 hitters compared to just 28 walks.
He is the 16th Irish player drafted under head coach Mik Aoki and the 45th MLB Draft pick in Aoki’s career. Solomon is the eighth selection to go in the first 10 rounds during Aoki’s tenure at Notre Dame and gives the Irish a selection in the first five rounds for the fifth time in the last five MLB Drafts.
