Second Round
Courtney Tennis Center
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind.
Second Round:
Notre Dame 5, South Carolina 1
Notre Dame head coach Jay Louderback
On jumping out to a 3-0 lead:
“It put the pressure on them so they were fighting from behind the whole match. Getting a big lead was a key to the match.”
On the clinching match:
“Lindsey Green had lost her singles (match) and was not happy so she thought she had something to prove. She went out and played very well. Those two at number three doubles have been a great strength for us.”
On what he told his team afterwards:
“I told them that they’ve had a great year and this was one of the hardest played matches I’ve ever had a team play. It’s one of the best matches I’ve seen us play . . . ever.”
Notre Dame player Kelly Zalinski
On clinching the match:
“It’s incredible, especially to be out there in doubles with Lindsey (Green). We just went out there to win. It’s exciting.”
On her singles match:
“Since I had a three-hour match yesterday, I had so much practice in the wind that I came out here today and was used to it.”
On advancing to the round of 16 at the national site:
“It’s my first trip (to the round of 16) in four years. It feels great. I would have liked to go the other years but it’s great that I’m finally getting to go my senior year.”
Notre Dame player Nina Vaughan
On coming back in both sets of her match:
“I know a match is never over until you shake hands and I knew that if I could just hold serve and break once, then I would be right back in the match. I think she put a lot more pressure on herself and I was able to just stay tough.”
South Carolina head coach Arlo Elkins
On Notre Dame’s performance:
“Notre Dame played well and they deserve to be in the sweet sixteen. They’re solid all the way down (the lineup).”
On Katarina Markovski’s match:
“She just didn’t have it today. Markovski’s a great player and for us to have a chance to win, I think we had to have her at 100 percent and she wasn’t near that today. It’s unfortunate for her and unfortunate for the team. I think she did well just to get out there and play. She’s a gutsy girl but she was only about 60 percent.”
On the conditions:
“I think the weather was a factor. We played a lot in the wind this year and we should have been used to it, although we didn’t play a good match in the wind. I think it was disappointing that the weather wasn’t better for both sides. I think it would have been a much better match if the weather had been real good.”
